75th Foundation Year of Central Silk Board:
Central Silk Board (CSB) is a statutory body established in 1949 by an Act of Parliament. It is working under the administrative control of Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Central Silk Board (CSB) was established for the inclusive development of sericulture and is the only organization in India presently working under Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. This organization is unique in India dealing with overall Research and Development on Sericulture, which is a village-based agro industry providing huge livelihood to around 95 lakhs rural villagers in the country. This organization caters to over 27 states of the country, creating sustainable livelihood to over 95 lakhs families, particularly the poor, women’s and tribal. The silk is unique in nature due to its fabric quality and its production is eco-friendly which promotes and protects plantations. With 159 offices across the country, CSB not only supports the sericulture sector through extensive research and development but also significantly uplifts the socio-economic conditions of the communities involved.
Central Silk Board (CSB) carries the vision to see India emerges as the leader in the world market for silk. It also carries various missions to accomplish including making continuous efforts in Research and Development and Technology Transfer. They also try to create greater opportunities for gainful employment and improved levels of income in sericulture through spread of scientific sericulture practices. They keep on improving productivity in all stages of silk production and strengthen levels of efficiency through a commitment to quality.
The mandate of Central Silk Board (CSB) encompasses several key objectives aimed at the development of the silk industry. It involves promoting the industry’s growth through various effective measures and supporting scientific, technological, and economic research related to silk production. This includes devising improved methods for mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, developing and distributing healthy silkworm seeds, and enhancing the techniques for silk reeling and spinning. To ensure the quality of raw silk, the mandate stipulates that all raw silk must be tested and graded in properly equipped Silk Testing and Conditioning Houses before marketing. Additionally, it focuses on improving the marketing of raw silk and collecting relevant statistics. The mandate also includes advising the Central Government on matters related to the silk industry, including its import and export, and preparing reports as required by the government to support on-going development efforts.
