Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi | Rs. 100 UNC Coin | 3 Folder Pack

A prolific writer, politician and a multi-faceted leader Kalaignar Muthuvel Karunanidhi was born on 3 June 1924 in a village of Thirukkuvalai, Nagapattinam district, in Tamil Nadu. Popularly Known as Kalaignar (Artist), he excelled as a poet, legislator, and thinker. He made his name as screenwriter in Tamil films. He has penned more than 100 books of prose and poetry including Sanga Tamizh, thirukkural Urai, Ponnar Sankar, etc. His dedication to Tamil culture is evident in his vast literary contributions and his instrumental role in establishing Tamil as a classical language.

His legacy extends beyond literature. As Chief Minister, he championed social and economic development in Tamil Nadu. He established the Slum Clearance Board and a Public Distribution Scheme to aid the underprivileged. Social welfare programs were expanded, and his innovative “Samathuvapuram” scheme promoted housing integration across communities. He prioritized healthcare, establishing medical colleges in every district and expanding rural clinics. Industrial development was fostered through initiatives like setting up industrial estates every 50 km. Karunanidhi also championed progressive social reforms, legislating equal property rights for women and recognizing the rights of transgender people. He established the State Planning Commission for strategic development and played a key role in resolving the Cauvery Water dispute. Furthermore, his “TIDEL” parks launched Tamil Nadu into the IT sector.

Karunanidhi’s five terms as Chief Minister saw progressive social reforms and infrastructure development, solidifying his legacy as a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s history. Being a devoted disciple of Periyar E.V.R., he committed himself to exterminate the social upheavals, casteism and blind beliefs and advocated unity of the Tamils. He is considered to be the political as well as literary heir to Peraringnar Anna. His astute administration and progressive policies, coupled with his significant contributions to Tamil language and culture, garnered widespread acclaim. The government of India has released the commemorative coin on the commemorating the occasion of Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi.
