“Endangered Animals of India – Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros”
The Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, or Indian Rhino, is one of the largest of the rhino species. Once widespread across the entire northern part of the Indian subcontinent. Kaziranga National Park, Manas National Park, Pobitora Reserve Forest, Orang National Park, Laokhowa Reserve Forest of Assam, and Royal Chitwan National Park in Nepal are homes for this endangered animal.
They have thick gray-brown skin with pinkish skin folds and one horn on their snout. Their horn is typically 20–61 cm long and weighs up to 3 kg. The average length is 12 feet, and the female is 11 feet and weighs up to 2200 kg and 1600 kg, respectively. They have an average life span of around 40–45 years. Indian rhinos are grazers and their diet consists of grasses, leaves, twigs, etc. They make at least 10 distinct vocalizations. Indian Rhinoceros is listed as vulnerable as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
In ancient times, Rhinoceros were present in large numbers all across India, but in present time, they are confined to the only state of Assam and other adjoining areas. The Indian one-horned rhinoceros is the second largest rhinoceros in the world.
Due to the ancient belief in the healing and magical powers of their horns, poaching has become highly prevalent, which has led to a decrease in their population. IUCN has declared them ‘endangered. The Indian and Nepalese governments have taken major steps toward the conservation of Indian rhinoceros with the help of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
To generate awareness about one of the endangered species that are mainly found in India, i.e., Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros, also known as Indian Rhino, the India Government Mint, Kolkata, is launching a Color Souvenir coin based on “Endangered Animals of India – Greater One Horned Rhinoceros”—the first of the special series of coins on Endangered Animals of India.
Greater One-Horned Rhinos are one of the endangered animals of India, and it is crucial that we take action to preserve their population and habitat. Let us work together to ensure that our future generations can witness the beauty and wonder of this incredible animal.
